The Role of Mobiles in Disasters and Emergencies, for the GSM Association, December 2005
This report assessed the impact that the widespread availability of mobile phones has had on the recovery from specific disasters and atrocities, such as the Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the summer floods in central Europe, and terrorist attacks in Istanbul and London. It led the GSMA and others to launch their ‘text not talk’ campaigns advising people affected to use text messages to try to contact family and friends.
